Former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Tuesday that he will not be running for president in 2017 (Yonhap*). The decision comes as some of Ban’s family are in the midst of a minor political scandal. Ban’s resignation–he was compared as a probable candidate, but never formally announced his intent to run–opens the door to liberal contenders such as Moon Jae-in and Park Woon-soon. South Korea is set to have a presidential election in 2017 no matter the ruling by the Constitutional Court. The only question left is when the election will take place. Either way, the election is shaping up to be a contentious vote which will see opposition candidates go against an embroiled ruling Saenuri Party.
Personal Note: The blog’s author thought a Ban bid would be an interesting show for South Korea.
