Judge Han Jung-seok of the Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for Samsung’s de-facto leader Lee Jae-young in connection with the Choi Soon-sil scandal. Judge Han issued the warrant at 5:37am (local time) on the ground that allegations Samsung paid bribes to gain the National Pension Service to back a controversial merger were sufficient grounds for arrest. Samsung, as one would figure, is denying that the payments were bribes (Korea Times). Authorities can detain Lee for up to 20 days before indicting him. (More to come in tonight’s Daily Update.)
